W3-1878 FR curves

Below you’ll see the FR curves for the Tang Band 3″ full range driver. Both curves are with the driver in the the box, measured at 0.5m but normalized to 1m/2.83v so the sensitivity is 80dB. There is 5-6dB of net baffle step correction. Two curves are shown. The black curve shows the response with a simple parallel LCR trap. The red curve adds a LR shelf. It appears the LR shelf to roll off the rise above 8k isn’t necessary, but makes the curve look better. I’m not bothering with the shelf in the final design. Full range drivers roll off anyway off axis much more so than a typical 2 way with 1″ dome, so peaking isn’t really noted. The 15 degree off axis curve for the unit without the shelf looks just like the red curve, so toe the speakers if you think you hear the rise.

    Hi!

    Thank you for posting this!
Will you test this driver extensively, like scan-speak 10F?
    How would you compare these?
Its good that there seems to be more and more new extended range woofers. Whats good about them is very flat impedance and low inductance. Vifa NE line is similar too(now Peerless Platinum).

      Hi Martin,
I have a limited set of measurements that I’ll post along with a more complete project description when the project is done. In addition, I’ll send them off to Zaph and have him evaluated them as well. So, you should see enough data on them. Be patient though, my day job is currently quite taxing…

The vifa series are nice. They’re on my list, but not on sale yet…

    Any updates on this project?

I have a completed xover. I just haven’t had time to listen long enough to my satisfaction. I got sidetracked in the Topping and it’s minor FR variations. Anyway, I have a little free time for speakerbuilding this next week and will be dividing it between a Madisound version of the ER18dxt and finishing these. Expect and update in the next 2 weeks.
